Exprodat Supports Greek Hydrocarbon Exploration and Exploitation Education

Exprodat, a Getech Group company, has provided the School of Geology at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki in Greece with an educational use licence of its popular Exploration Analyst software to support a Masters thesis that will explore the ‘Play-based exploration and common risk segment analysis of the main plays in the Norwegian North Sea’.

The Getech Group has a long history of supporting the next generation of explorationists with donations of commercially valuable software, geological data and expertise. Students who can leave their studies with experience and knowledge of industry standards such as the Exprodat ArcGIS-based software will increase their chances of employment after they graduate.

The M.Sc. in “Hydrocarbon Exploration and Exploitation” at the Aristotle University is a two-year, full time multidisciplinary programme covering a wide range of earth science, engineering and economics subjects that can be applied to hydrocarbon exploration and production. It is a joint inter-institutional program between the four largest Universities in Greece: Aristotle University of Thessaloniki; National Technical University of Athens; Democritus University of Thrace; and the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens.

This specific project, which will develop common risk segment analysis within an area of interest in the North Sea, is being overseen by Professor Andreas Georgakopoulos who explained more about the intended results of this work and how Exploration Analyst will support his student’s efforts; “Through our close industry contacts we are aware that Exploration Analyst is a great software to comprehensively review the main exploration plays in the area of interest. It will provide to the student a powerful and time-saving tool to get familiarised with play fairway mapping techniques and with mapping in detail associated play risk elements through calibration to key wells of the various plays. The intention is to analyse the basin maturity through construction of basin and play statistics; workflows that are properly integrated within Exploration Analyst“.

Exploration Analyst was developed by London-based Exprodat – the oil and gas ArcGIS platform specialist and Esri Gold Partner. This ArcGIS extension provides users with a simple and fast route to creating common risk segment maps to help identify play fairways and sweet spots; and powerful basin and play resources analysis, including the creation of Yet-To-Find (YTF) volume estimates.

Chris Jepps, Chief Operating Office of the Getech Group, explains why the company decided to support the University ; “At Exprodat we maintain close links with many respected Academic institutions, and our new relationship with the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki in Greece extends a network that already includes Imperial College’s Petroleum Geoscience department and the University of Oslo, among others. We’re delighted that, like many of our other academic partners, the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki is able to use our software to help train students while furthering their geoscientific understanding.
