As Exprodat, the energy sector GIS specialist and Getech Group company, have just released version 3.2 of Unconventionals Analyst for ArcGIS Pro, I’d like to highlight my top 5 new features so you can check them out when you install the new version.
1. Create Better Gun Barrel Diagrams
Our customers loved the first version of the Create Gun Barrel Plot tool, which allows you to do things like:
- Interactively draw a cross-section line across your key wells and create a Gun Barrel plot from those wells
- Measure true spacing between multiple wells and multiple benches
- Visualize your key geological horizons.
The initial version of the tool gained many new users and through our support requests we could see they were making many new and innovative gun barrel plots. We also had quite a few enhancement requests to the tool, which was fantastic.
In the new release, you can do even more:
- Visualize well depth ranges with ‘box plot’ displays
- Flatten wells on an interval – just like you do on seismic interpretations – to guage thickness changes
- Size and color your well symbols – e.g. to make your super-producers ‘pop’ on the display
- Control the y-axis range – so you can get the display size you want.
These further enhancements really enable you to create the gun barrel diagrams that you need, so that drawing them manually should definitely now be history!
2. Realize Wells
We know that well data is not always complete – sometimes you’re missing the full well geometry, or perhaps you’ve only got top-hole and bottom-hole locations? Incomplete well data can make calculating spacings or running parent-child analysis difficult, not to mention that your wells will often display with an unrealistic fan or “crow’s foot” geometry.
To help with this we developed a new tool called Realize Wells, which interactively adds heel points to your “crow’s feet” wells – allowing you to simulate the full well geometry and so get better spacing measurements and analysis results.
In the image below you can see the tool in action – check out the before (black wells, with a selected set shown in light blue) and after (pink) displays. Again, this means much less manual editing!
3. Re-space Your Well Sticks Inventory
How often have you created inventory, named your wells, applied UWIs and completed further engineering work, only for a colleague to come back to you and say “Great work on the inventory, now we need you to do that again at tighter/wider spacing. Oh and by the way, please can you keep all the well IDs the same?!” We hear from our customers that this is a regular occurrence.
So, to help you with that, we’ve released an enhancement to the Create Well Sticks tool that essentially allows you to re-space your existing wells while adding new ones if necessary.
4. The Options Pane
In response to your enhancement suggestions, we’ve added a new Options pane. This allows you to control some of the cross-application settings of Unconventionals Analyst.
A good example of this is having cross-application control of the “end type” used by created drained area polygons – no more hot-dog shapes if you don’t want them! Another example is controlling the location of the reserves methods configuration files. If you want to have cross-application control of other settings, just let us know and we will look to implement them in a future version.
5. Trim Wells Tool
Lastly, the trim head functions have been so well received that you have been requesting that we make it a tool in it’s own right. You’ve told us that you want to isolate your lateral sections before running other tools, which we understand is always helpful when you’re trying to have consistent analysis.
We listened and have now implemented this – so you can now find a Trim Wells tool in the Manage Wells toolset where you’ll also find Realize Wells and Assign Depth to Wells.
We hope you enjoy the new version – please let us know how you get on and keep those enhancement ideas coming!
